Zero-backlash gears only exist in theoretical mathematics. In the physical world, gears require backlash—intentional clearance between mating tooth flanks—to accommodate manufacturing tolerances, lubrication films, center-distance errors, and thermal expansion. GearDXF lets you dial in exact backlash tolerances.
Backlash is the amount of clearance between mating gear teeth when their pitch circles touch. Without backlash, manufacturing imperfections or thermal expansion will cause teeth to jam and stall the drive motor.
GearDXF symmetrically thins each gear tooth along its involute flank by half the backlash value, keeping the pitch circle and center distance mathematically constant while introducing exact physical clearance.
